AKE Raises Brazil Risk Rating

Published Jun 21, 2013 2:24 PM by The Maritime Executive

International risk mitigation company AKE has raised the security risk rating for Brazil amid escalating nationwide protests.

The country is now rated at AKE21 (Heightened Security Concerns), up from AKE19 (Elevated Risk).

The demonstrators are protesting against perceived high levels of government corruption, the rising cost of public services and high state spending on international sporting events ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

According to AKE's Americas specialist Lorena Gutierrez conditions could worsen even further in the short term.

"Clashes between demonstrators and the police are currently taking place on a frequent basis and the security landscape is likely to deteriorate before it improves.”

On its security, political and travel risk website Global Intake, AKE currently warns that visitors to Brazil should avoid large crowds and public gatherings.
