Serodino Delivers New Class of Workboat

After fifty-nine Tiger Class vessels, Serodino, Inc. introduced a Super Tiger with the construction of the M/V Blue Wing for Logsdon Tug Service of Beardstown, Illinois.  In response to a demand for a slightly longer and somewhat wider vessel to accommodate the Cummins engines’ increase in horsepower from 1200hp to 1320hp, Serodino is offering a Super Tiger class workboat.  Production will continue on the popular 52’ x 22’ Tiger model. 

The M/V Blue Wing is a 1320hp twin screw 56’ x 24’ x 7’-9” workboat built to operate on the Illinois River in the Beardstown/Meredosia, Illinois area where additional freeboard will be welcome.  The hull is constructed of 1/2” plate throughout.  The inside motor mounts are continued fore and aft as solid sheets to divide the hull into three collision compartments, three fuel tanks (8,000 gallons), engine room, three water tanks and six stern compartments.  A 110-gallon lube oil tank and a 110-gallon transmission oil tank are built into the hull.

Power is furnished by a pair of Cummins QSK-19-M engines, developing a total of 1320 continuous horsepower at 1800 rpm, with Twin-Disc MG-5222 reverse and 4.03 to 1 reduction gears turning 4-1/2” sleeved shafts and 52” x 41” four-blade wheels.  Two 40-k.w. John Deere MDDCA light plants furnish auxiliary electric power.  The Skipper steering system consists of follow up lever controls, independently activating four flanking and two main rudders.  Carlisle Finch furnished incandescent and Xenon searchlights, Wintech furnished two 40 ton deck electric winches and Fernstrum supplied 0 Knot coolers for main engines and generators.  Schuyler rubber towknees and perimeter fenders protect the hull.

The superstructure is constructed of 3/16” plate with 2” x 2-1/2” x 1/4” framing; doors are steel and windows are aluminum with safety glass panes.  The first deck is 17’ x 27’ long and contains a storage room, a 12’ x 10’ galley, and a modest head with shower; the second deck is a 10’ x 10’ deck locker.  The 9’-3” x 9’-3” pilothouse has full instrumentation, alarms, and vessel control.  There is a 3’ space below the pilothouse to make an eye level of 28’.

The Blue Wing is now working in the ice bound Illinois River at Beardstown.
