One Dead After Boat Hits Barge

One person has died after a pleasurecraft struck a barge near Bayou Segnette, Louisiana, on Sunday.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report at 4:15 a.m. of a 22-foot recreational vessel with four passengers aboard that collided with a barge, veered off and then ran aground, ejecting one of the people on board. 

The barge launched a small boat to assist. They recovered the ejected woman and brought her to emergency services. 

An MH-65 helicopter crew arrived on scene at 6:18 a.m. and medevaced three of the passengers to West Jefferson Medical Hospital with serious injuries.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the agency leading the investigation, said the woman who died was 26 years old. Those taken to hospital ranged from ages 23 to 34.
