Fire Kills Two Aboard Tanker at Turkish Shipyard
[Brief] Turkish prosecutors have launched an investigation into the cause of a deadly fire aboard the tanker LR2 Poseidon at Tuzla Shipyard, one of the largest shipyards in Turkey.
A fire broke out in one of the vessel's machinery spaces during defueling operations at Tuzla's Istanbul yard on Monday. According to the Governor of Istanbul, the blaze killed two workers, identified as Muhammed Ali Yilmaz and Mehmet Tutuncu. Eleven more suffered burn injuries, including one individual who is reportedly in critical condition.
The fire was quickly brought under control, authorities said. The extent of the damage to the vessel is being assessed.
The LR2 Poseidon is an Aframax crude oil tanker, not an LR2 product tanker, despite her name. She has no significant history of inspection deficiencies.
