Captain of the Port Alerts Mariners of Tidal Range

Published Dec 13, 2012 4:46 PM by The Maritime Executive

The Captain of the Port of New York/New Jersey is advising mariners, waterfront facilities and the public of a larger than normal tidal range in the Battery Park, N.Y., area from December 12 –15.

The Port of New York/New Jersey will experience larger than normal tidal ranges due to a spring tide. According to forecasts from the National Weather Service, tides during this period at Battery Park are expected to be approximately one foot above the normal high tide of five feet.

There is the potential for an increase in hazards within our waterways, as there is still a significant amount of marine debris from Hurricane Sandy within this tidal range. Accordingly, mariners, waterfront facilities and the public are advised to remain vigilant to possible hazards to navigation.

Members of Coast Guard Sector New York are actively working with our local and federal partners to identify and /or remove those hazards that are posing a navigation or environment threat.

Sector New York is readily available to answer any questions or provide assistance regarding these navigation or pollution hazards. For additional information or further clarification, please contact the Sector New York Command Center at (718) 354-4353 or the Vessel Traffic Service at (718) 354-4088 or on VHF-FM Channels 11, 12, 14 or 16.
