IMO Adopts Regulations for Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships

The organization adopted amendments to the Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships in MARPOL Annex VI, including a new special emissions control area for the North Sea, which is expected to be fully implemented in November, 2007. MEPC also agreed to develop a new mandatory policy to cover ship recycling, which takes current technology into account.

A review will be completed by 2007. The MEPC also adopted four new particularly sensitive sea areas (PSSAs): the Baltic Sea area, the Canary Islands, the Galapagos Archipelago, and the Great Barrier Reef PSSA will include the Torres Strait. The Committee also discussed ballast water issues.
