Filter Captures Hydrocarbons as Scupper Drains Freely

Published Feb 27, 2013 10:25 AM by The Maritime Executive

If damaged or misaligned, an item as small as a scupper plug can cause huge problems on board a commercial vessel. C.I.Agent Storm•Water Solutions has developed a failsafe scupper filter that completely eliminates the potential for hydrocarbon release due to a malfunctioning plug. The high-strength, lightweight structure of the C.I.Agent Scupper Filter permits water to flow from the deck while capturing oil and sheen. This product was tested extensively on US Flag tank vessels.

Embedded within the filter is C.I.Agent, a proprietary blend of seven polymers that provides an environmentally safe and highly effective method of encapsulating and solidifying hydrocarbons on contact. C.I.Agent solidifying polymers are effective in temperatures ranging from -30º F to over 130º F.
The filter's fabric is made from patent-pending Agent-Q, a versatile hydrophilic spunbond nonwoven material specially developed for its high hydrocarbon binding and filtration capability. Agent-Q has an average grab strength of a nominal 60 psi and burst strength of a nominal 70 psi to stand up to constant use.

The C.I.Agent Scupper Filter is designed with a polyurethane mount that fits snugly below the scupper hole surface and allows easy opening and closing of the scupper's cover. The filter itself bears a PVC female threaded fitting, permitting convenient installation and replacement. Included in the Scupper Filter is a 100% polyester pre-filter to filter out sediment, scale, rust, paint chips and other debris. A tough outer sleeve protects the filter fabric from tearing during installation in the drain hole.

One of the biggest advantages of the C.I.Agent Scupper Filter is its low resistance to water flow, allowing water to be rapidly processed. The filter completely solidifies and shuts off all discharge in the event of a significant hydrocarbon release. Besides its use in draining scuppers, the filter works in many types of industrial floor or roof drain applications, or in bridge or overpass drains.

C.I.Agent Scupper Filters are available in 4", 5" and 6" diameters to fit the majority of ships worldwide, with custom solutions available. They are designed for both vertical and horizontal scupper drains.
