Violent Storm Beaches Russian Cargo Ship off Turkish Coast

Published Mar 11, 2011 3:26 PM by The Maritime Executive

Strong winds and high seas forced the Russian owned cargo ship DVINA to be thrown ashore Tuesday, off the coast of Turkey.

The ship was anchored in the Marmara Sea when the storm moved through the area. Rough seas broke the anchor and strong winds pushed the vessel ashore.

Officials say a hole in the hull of the ship is causing oil to leak into the waters near Karabiga port where the ship sits stranded.

No injuries to the 11 Russian crewmembers have been reported. The 3,174 dwt. cargo ship is owned by High Seas Shipping, Ltd. and is operated by Dimar Freight.

Strong winds continue to affect rescue efforts.
