Salvage & Special Ops Edition

Maritime Executive Arsenio Dominguez

(Article originally published in Sept/Oct 2026 edition.)

A CHARISMATIC LEADER

How else to describe the dynamic secretary-general of the IMO, Arsenio Dominguez! His energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and we're honored to have him on our cover. “I like to keep busy,” he says, and we’re grateful he found time to sit down with us and talk about the role of the IMO in defending seafarers' rights and promoting freedom of navigation in an increasingly war-torn world, as well as his own vision for the future of the IMO and of maritime itself.

It was a wide-ranging and informative interview, and you can read all about it in this issue's exclusive Executive Interview.

On the geopolitical front, Erik Kravets has fun with the E.U.’s bumbling trade policies in "Inverse Flows." Allen Brooks takes aim at the soaring price of LNG in "Supply Chain Vulnerability," and Brigadier Jonathan Campbell-James asks, "Who's in Charge of the Taiwan Invasion?" in his scathing analysis of Chairman Xi's leadership abilities (or lack thereof).

Meanwhile, Senior Editor Jack O'Connell takes a walk down memory lane in his wistful meditation on "Earnings Season." Jack also managed to interview salesman extraordinaire Brad Kerr of Detyens Shipyards for his Executive Achievement feature. “If it floats, we fix it," Kerr quips.

These are insightful and entertaining commentaries-not to be missed!

In our annual Global Salvage Review, columnist Pat Zeitler talks about the decline of standard LOF (Lloyd's Open Form) cases and the industry's expansion into other areas in “An Ocean of Services." Maritime consultant Chad Fuhrmann explains how sophisticated heavy-mover equipment like cranes and winches are becoming smarter and more connected in "More Than Muscle," and ports columnist Tom Peters zeroes in on container ports and how they're dealing with tariffs and shifting supply chains in his aptly titled "Obstacle Course.”

On the futuristic front, Sean Hogue describes the rise of nuclear power as a future energy source for ships in "Achieving Criticality," while the other Sean - Sean Holt - explores the growing risks of cyberattacks on shipping and how to prevent them in "When the Hacker Comes Aboard."

Lots of intellectual capital here, so load up and enjoy!

And don't miss our inaugural "International WorkBoat Show Supplement" in this edition. As long-time supporters and exhibitors at the event, we decided to give our readers a preview of some of the companies who'll be exhibiting and what to expect in New Orleans this year. It's December 2-4, and it promises to be the biggest one ever. See you there! – MarEx
