Crowley Maritime has developed a new design and operating concept for a "medical support barge" - a large deck barge retrofitted with living units, which could be quickly deployed to provide emergency housing during the response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Crowley has nearly a dozen multipurpose barges available for temporary conversion, along with a fleet of tugs for positioning. The company says that its design would provide housing for more than 500 people per barge, or 5,500 people in total.

A charity crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise funds for developing world seafarers and their families that have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
All funds raised will go to the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN), a U.K. registered charity, and dispersed through their Seafarers Emergency Fund. Their membership includes seafarer associations throughout the developing world alongside shipping companies and shipping organizations.

Canada's Minister of Transport Marc Garneau has announced new measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission on commercial passenger vessels and ferries.
As of April 6, the new measures prohibit all commercial marine vessels with a capacity of more than 12 passengers from engaging in non-essential activities, such as tourism or recreation. These measures will remain in place until at least June 30.
