'Captain Phillips' Sails to the Oscars

In 2013, the portrayal of ‘Captain Phillips’ on the big screen brought some much-needed public recognition of the maritime industry, its crewmen, and other global issues including maritime security and piracy.

‘Captain Phillips’ has now landed 6 nominations for the 2014 Oscars – including Best Picture. Read more about the nods below:

Actor in a Supporting Role for Barkhad Abdi portraying Muse, the leader of a band of Somali pirates who seize the merchant vessel. Abdi is a former Minnesota-based Somali limousine driver who answered a Captain Phillips casting call, without ever acting before. This is the first Academy Award nomination for Barkhad Abdi.

Best Picture – Producers Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca recognized.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay) by Billy Ray; this is the first Academy Award nomination for him.
