Serodino Completes Super Tiger Workboat

Published Sep 11, 2015 10:59 AM by The Maritime Executive

In response to a demand for a longer, wider, and heavier hull, the Super Tiger is a successor to the popular Tiger Class series with 59 new constructions.

The 1200hp twin screw M/V Carolyn Lampley has a 56 foot by 24 foot by 8 foot hull constructed with a half inch plate throughout.  The inside motor mounts are continued fore and act as solid sheets to divide the hull into three collision compartments: three fuel tanks (8,000 gallons), engine room, three water tanks and six stern compartments.  A lube oil tank, a transmission oil tank and two waste oil tanks are built into the hull.

The Super Tiger is powered by a pair of Fabick furnished Caterpillar C-18 engines, producing a total of 1,200 continuous horsepower at 1800 rpm, with Twin-Disc MGX-5222 DC reverse and 4.03 to 1 reduction gears turning four and a half inch sleeved shafts and 52 inch by 40 inch Kahlenberg four-blade wheels.  Two 40KW John Deere 4045 MDDCA light plants provide auxiliary electric power.  The Skipper steering system consists of follow up lever controls, backed up by jog steering, independently activating four flanking and two main rudders.  Carlisle Finch furnished incandescent and Xenon searchlights, Wintech furnished two 40 ton deck electric winches and Fernstrum supplied 0 Knot coolers for main engines and generators.  M&M Bumper Service rubber towknees and perimeter fenders protect the hull.

The superstructure is constructed of 3/16” plate with 2” x 2-1/2” x 1/4” framing; doors are stainless steel by Omega Products and windows are aluminum with safety glass panes.  The first deck is 17x29 and contains a storage room, a modest head, and a 17 foot by 12 foot galley.  The second deck is 15x6x16 and divided into two spartan quarters with a US Coast Guard-approved head and stainless steel shower.  The 9 1/3 foot by 9 1/3 foot pilothouse has full instrumentation, alarms, and vessel control.  There is a 4 foot space between the pilothouse to make an eye level of 28 feet.

Work has also begun on an additional Super Tiger for Hunter Marine and on a spec vessel for year-end delivery.
