Machinery Alert: W?rtsil? RT-Flex 2 Stroke Engines with WECS-9520 Control Systems
Wärtsilä recently released Technical Bulletin RT-153 warning of a potential issue regarding RT-flex 2 stroke engines fitted with WECS-9520 control systems. These control systems can become inoperative if the operator changes certain user parameters, potentially leading to loss of engine operation.
What to do if you believe you are affected by this issue?
The issue is easily corrected by downloading the software update for the WECS-9520 control system, detailed in the Bulletin. Once the software update has been completed correctly this report will be found within the control system.
What has LR done regarding this issue?
LR surveyors have been made aware of the issue and know how to check if the software update has been completed correctly. All LR vessels potentially affected by this issue have had the following Machinery Memo added to their records within Class Direct (formerly ClassDirect Live):
“Main Engine RT-flex WECS-9520 control system – at the next attendance Surveyors are to verify that the software update as required by Wartsila Technical Bulletin RT-153 has been satisfactorily completed. If there is a different control system and/or software installed this is to be reported and marked for vetting. On satisfactory completion this memo may be deleted.
