The Belgian Navy has destroyed an unexploded World War II mine after its discovery off the Belgian coast by the crew of the minehunter BNS Bellis (M916) on Thursday.

An unexploded ordnance team destroyed the mine on Friday.

The mine was destroyed during Sandy Coast 2018 - a joint naval exercise taking place in Belgian waters this month.

“This news highlights the continuing importance of our efforts to control our territorial waters and to keep our armed forces sharp through exercises such as Sandy Coast,” said the Navy in a statement.
