Published Dec 22, 2010 2:38 PM by The Maritime Executive

“Waterways Transportation: Obstacles and Opportunities” This year’s seventh annual Waterways Symposium, taking place in Saint Paul, Minnesota, October 4-6, will examine the array of obstacles and opportunities facing the waterways and waterways transportation. Waterways Council, Inc., Informa Economics, Inc., and The Waterways Journal join forces once again to present this informative, timely and not-to-be-missed event. Speakers from industry, government and associations will address trends in the world’s economies that affect business here in the U.S. as well as opportunities for exports; Panama Canal expansion and the readiness of the inland waterways transportation network for that growth; forecasting the outlook for key commodities moving on the system; Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and which navigation projects are at risk; recipes for Asian Carp’s demise; the Missouri River; Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program (NESP); the Inland Waterways Capital Development Plan; navigating Capitol Hill and the political landscape; and effectively communicating our maritime story. The venue for this year’s symposium is the historic Saint Paul Hotel, a fixture in Saint Paul’s lovely Rice Park District. The Saint Paul Hotel is Minnesota’s landmark hotel, and is offering a discounted rate of $164 (deluxe single or deluxe double) for reservations made by September 13, 2010. Attendees will enjoy an opening reception on Monday evening (October 4), plenary sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday (October 5 and 6), and a special event at the Science Museum of Minnesota on Tuesday night (October 5). Who should attend this year’s symposium? If you are involved with, dependent on or interested in future opportunities on the inland waterways, you will not want to miss this year’s symposium.
