RINA Endorses Distance Learning Certificate in Naval Architecture

Published Jan 26, 2011 2:30 PM by The Maritime Executive

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects has lent its support to a new training course from Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, a leading provider of training for the maritime industry. The Certificate in Naval Architecture is a 14-week course which provides the essential tools and knowledge needed to understand this absorbing discipline, for anyone who works with ships or is interested in their design. The programme – totally delivered by distance learning - starts on 19th April 2011 and is currently enrolling at Lloyd’s Maritime Academy (website: www.lloydsmaritimeacademy.com/napr)

Eric Tupper, an Honorary Vice-President and Fellow of RINA, is the course director and co-author. He is a leading authority and respected author in the field of naval architecture, and brings an unrivalled depth of experience combined with an infectious passion for the subject.

“Ships are vital to modern day life as they carry some 95% of our trade,” says Mr. Tupper. “They come in many types and sizes; each bringing its own special features. This is one thing which makes naval architecture such a fascinating subject.”

“This course is different because it is delivered by distance learning. It offers you the flexibility to study where and when it’s convenient for you, and online tutorial support will be provided by me and my fellow faculty members.”

RINA’s endorsement means students who successfully complete the certificate are eligible to join the Institution as Associate members (AssocRINA). They will then be able to enjoy the membership benefits of this leading international professional society, serving those directly or indirectly involved with the design, construction and operation of marine vessels and structures.

A knowledge of ship design is of course critical to many professionals working on or with ships. But why does naval architecture hold such a fascination for so many in the broader maritime sector?

“Although modern technology has transformed the work of the naval architect, the subject still retains a significant element of art,” says Mr. Tupper. “This art is partly that of the traditional artist in producing an aesthetically pleasing object, and partly that of blending many factors to create an efficient product. This exciting new programme makes the art and science of naval architecture accessible to a wide range of people, all over the world.”

The Certificate in Naval Architecture joins the many distance learning courses currently enrolling at Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, which can be found at www.lloydsmaritimeacademy.com/pr
