MMA's Admiral's Ball to Take Place on 14 November 2008
The 14th Annual Admiral's Ball will take place on 14 November 2008 in the Harbor Ballroom of the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston, MA. The Academy's 2008 Maritime Man of the Year will be Morten Arntzen, President & Chief Executive Officer of Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc.
The annual event raises the profile of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to demonstrate the value of the Academy and its graduates as investments in the future. As always, the Emery Rice Medal will be presented to the chief executive who personifies the highest standards of the Academy and related industries. The gala event also helps to raise funds to support the Academy's prestigious Presidential Scholarships.
Now in its 117th year, Massachusetts Maritime Academy continues to excel as the nation's top maritime academy. MMA deck and engine cadets again scored top marks on the USCG licensing exams and employment of the 2008 graduates is 100%. With the largest undergraduate enrollment of the academies and continuing growth of both graduate and undergraduate programs, MMA will continue to provide the most qualified seagoing and shoreside professionals to industry.
Each year MMA selects a civilian or military leader who has distinguished him or herself through a career of excellence, innovation, and service to the maritime industries. That honoree is presented with the Captain Emery Rice Medal, named for an 1895 Academy graduate and hero of the First World War.
The Admiral's Ball is one of several MMA efforts to address $5 million dollars in unmet financial need among MMA cadets every year. The first priority of the Admiral's Ball is to fund the Emery Rice and other Presidential Scholarships at the Academy. These are MMA's most rigorous scholarship programs with strong selection standards and a highly competitive field of applicants. Scholarship winners are selected to receive a scholarship equivalent to tuition, room, and board. At each Admiral's ball we honor the remarkable accomplishments of these future leaders.
The Admiral's Ball is the primary source of funding for these programs. As the program does not yet have an endowment fund, the Academy raises funds for the program each year. Proceeds from named sponsorships, the tickets from over 500 expected guests and advertisements in the dinner journal fund these important scholarships.
While the Ball honors a maritime leader and raises important funds for MMA cadets, it is also a terrific party. Maritime executives from around the world join with support industries, shoreside industries and MMA cadets for an evening of networking, fellowship, dining and dancing.
