CapRock Provides Communications for Otto Candie's Gulf of Mexico Fleet

Houston, TX (February 27, 2007): CapRock Communications, a leader in global satellite communications to remote and harsh locations, will provide VSAT services to Otto Candies’ fleet of support vessels operating in the Gulf of Mexico. With more than 50 years of experience specializing in offshore transportation and support services for the oil industry, Otto Candies has built a reputation for safely and responsibly completing jobs on time and within budget. The uncompromising communications provided by CapRock will support Otto Candies’ mission by enabling company officials at headquarters to make more accurate decisions regarding the operation of its vessels.

Prior to deploying CapRock’s always-on service, Otto Candies relied on a metered solution where customers were charged based on the number of minutes used or by the amount of data sent and received. This system was incapable of handling voice calls and had limited data capabilities, including slow data speeds that often resulted in e-mails that took a significant amount of time to transmit, resulting in expensive per-minute charges. Additionally, to help offset the costly fees, documents were frequently written in an abbreviated style, making them shorter but resulting in the need to “decode” them and increasing the likelihood of errors. CapRock’s enterprise-class solution enables Otto Candies to better budget its communication costs as the prices associated with metered services typically vary from month-to-month.

CapRock’s services provide Otto Candies’ vessels with more clear and more efficient communications. After just the first few days of testing a system onboard one of its vessels, the company saw the tangible benefits to having a VSAT solution. Otto Candies is no longer constrained by how often personnel can contact each vessel, and users now have the ability to call or e-mail whenever they need.

Otto Candies selected one of CapRock’s standard broadband packages, which delivers data speeds of 144Kbps to 256Kbps. This enables its personnel to send real-time reports to and from the vessels. These reports include critical data such as fuel levels, weather and sea conditions and up-to-date information on specific customer instructions. Additionally, with voice service included in the package, onshore personnel can call the boats anytime from their home or cell phones, without having to go to the office to connect with the vessels. The instantaneous communication enables Otto Candies to make faster, better decisions regarding the operations of its boats.

“Within the past few years, the maritime industry has seen a growing trend of vessels that rely less on metered services while adopting more always-on solutions,” said CapRock CEO Peter Shaper. “Now, with Otto Candies’ selection of CapRock, its headquarters personnel will have the tools they need to stay in touch with vessels and have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that a vessel is only a call away. We are pleased to have been selected by Otto Candies and look forward to working together in support of its mission.”
