Oceania Cruises has completed the disposition of its four original cruise ships (Oceania)

As part of an ongoing fleet modernization for the cruise lines of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and specifically Oceania Cruises, the line announced the departure of another of its original cruise ships. The Insignia (30,277 gross tons) becomes the third of the line’s original ships scheduled to depart, while the fourth ship is undergoing an upgrade for a new offering.

Germany’s Phoenix Reisen will take over the Insignia, which was built in 1998, and rename the vessel Alvara, for a November 2027 introduction. Oceania confirmed that the ship is expected to leave its fleet in September 2027, requiring the line to cancel eight published cruises.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has discussed a strategy it calls a move to align the Oceania fleet with its luxury positioning. NCLH CEO John Chidsey told investors it is a “deliberate portfolio action … that better supports the brand’s positioning and long-term return profile.”

The Insignia was built in France as the lead of a class of eight cruise ships planned for a smaller firm called Renaissance Cruises, and she entered service in 1998 as R One. Renaissance filed for bankruptcy in 2001, and the ship became Insignia as part of the start-up of Oceania Cruises. She is 180 meters (592 feet) in length with accommodations for 680 passengers. Oceania ultimately acquired four of the ships from the class.

NCLH previously announced plans to transfer Insignia to become a residential cruise ship, but that deal collapsed late last year. Her sister ship Regatta recently left Oceania to become a cruise ship for an Australian tour operator under a two-year charter that can be extended, while the sister ship Sirena will leave the fleet in 2028 for a new start-up operation in Germany. The fourth ship of the class, Nautica, will be “reimaged” in late 2027 as Oceania Aurelia with enlarged staterooms, reduced passenger capacity, and a new focus on longer cruises.

Oceania is beginning the introduction of a new class of ships, starting with Oceania Sonata (86,000 gross tons with accommodations for 1,390 passengers), which will enter service in August 2027. Four sister ships are on order for delivery in 2029, 2032, 2035, and 2037.

Germany’s Phoenix Reisen operates three ocean cruise ships, but recently ended the charter of a longtime favorite, Deutschland (22,500 gross tons with capacity for 550 passengers). The company, which will mark its 54th anniversary in November 2027, also operates a fleet of river cruise ships.

After taking over the former Insignia, the company reports the ship will enter dry dock at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven. In addition to the typical Phoenix paint job, it will receive a few changes to introduce what it calls the “typical Phoenix atmosphere.”

Renamed Alvara, the ship enters service in November 2027, offering several short trips, a Christmas cruise, and two longer trips in the Mediterranean as part of its inaugural program. The christening of the ship will take place as part of a special anniversary program for the company scheduled for November 26, 2027, in Hamburg.

For Oceania, it completes the disposition of its original, smaller cruise ships as it works to evolve its luxury offering. The line is also currently upgrading its cruise ship Marina (66,000 gross tons), built in 2011, to reflect the interior styles and amenities of its newer ships.
