Valence Technology has received DNV-GL marine certification for its U-Charge XP batteries and battery management system. They are the first Lithium battery supplier to gain accreditation through the new combined DNV-GL body. This designation indicates that the battery modules and the BMS systems are suitable for the installation on maritime surface and submarine vessels.

Driven by its purpose of safeguarding life, property and the environment, DNV GL enables organizations to advance the safety and sustainability of their business. Operating in more than 100 countries, the company’s 16,000 professionals are dedicated to helping their customers in the maritime, oil & gas, energy and other industries to make the world safer, smarter and greener.

Harald Pauli, Head of Department Pressure & Underwater Technology for DNV-GL commented, "As the use of lithium based energy becomes more prevalent in today's marine industry we are delighted to have worked with Valence on the type approval for their safe, scalable energy systems.”

“DNV-GL accreditation represents a major step for Valence and demonstrates the suitability of Valence’s unique scalable technology within the marine sector” said Brian Dargan, Managing Director for the EMEA region at Valence. “We are seeing tremendous growth within the marine market and we believe that DNV-GL certification will assure our existing and future customers of our safety in these demanding applications.”

Valence produces a range of safe, proven battery modules that can be scaled to any voltage and any capacity using a Valence proprietary Battery Management System (BMS). This BMS will provide balancing control while providing a communication interface via CANBus from the outside world to the Valence modules. A Master Battery Server (MBS) can also be used in systems where redundancy is desired or a specific communications protocol, such as ModBus, SMBus or other CANBus derivative, if required by the vessel. The DNV-GL type approval now also provides the additional assurance of using Valence products in challenging marine environments
