Virtual Marine Technology's Announces Newest Release of Lifeboat Training Simulator

Virtual Marine Technology (VMT) is announcing the newest release of SurvivalQuest Lifeboat Simulator System. SurvivalQuest is an enclosed cabin, full mission simulator system which uses lifeboat-specific helm controls and virtual environments to allow lifeboat coxswains and crew to practice emergency lifeboat launches too dangerous to complete using conventional training and drills. “Lifeboat and lifeboat launch system designs have become increasingly complex in recent years. As a result, operators require more frequent and extensive training to ensure they are prepared to evacuate and escape during emergency situations” said Captain Anthony Patterson, President of VMT. “VMT provides lifeboat simulators approved for use by maritime regulatory agencies such as IMO, US Coast Guard and certified for use by Det Norse Veritas.”

Lifeboat Accidents Continue to Happen with Alarming Regularity

While there are significant risks associated with using lifeboats, the greatest risks by far are associated with launching and recovering lifeboats during drills. With incidents and accidents continuing to happen at an alarming rate, the response of the maritime industry has been to significantly reduce or discontinue the practice launches of lifeboats with crew members onboard. By doing so, industry has created a potential risk that seafarers are not prepared to respond during real evacuation and escape events. Lifeboat coxswains may be compliant with regulatory requirements, but may not be competent with respect to effectively executing their duties.

VMT’s lifeboat simulators are currently used by maritime organizations to enhance lifeboat training for mariners and offshore workers. “Mariners need to be well trained, experienced and motivated to minimize mistakes” said Captain Patterson. “Lifeboat simulator systems expose mariners to harsh environments, equipment malfunctions, and other situations and scenarios not possible to create during conventional training and drills. Simulators allow lifeboat coxswains to develop competency through frequent practice of drills and ultimately reduce the risk of injury to crew and damage to life saving equipment”.
