Talleres Industriales Finishing Canal Tug Upgrade Works

Published Oct 27, 2014 9:06 PM by The Maritime Executive

Back in 2013, Talleres Industriales was awarded a multi-million dollar contract by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). This turn-key project consisted of repowering two tug-push boats including all the basic and detailed engineering, procurement and installation of all main equipment as well as performing all the required modifications to the boats themselves.

Using the company’s specialized know-how for this kind of project, Talleres developed the complete design and associated calculations as well as the selection process, assuring the acquisition of top quality equipment. By replacing the old equipment with new, remarkable performance improvements were made including higher speed and greater bollard pull.

The project also included reduction of noise levels inside the engine room, stability and propulsion calculations, heat exchange calculations for all engine room equipment and production of all the drawings required for repowering.

This month the first boat Culebra has returned to operation and the second, Gorgona, is just being completed.

On the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal, Talleres is proud to have contributed to one of the most prestigious and efficient companies in the world – ACP – and looks forward to continuing to provide assistance.
