Hyde GUARDIAN? Ballast Water Treatment System Selected for Largest Icebreaker in Russia's Rosmorport Fleet

Calgon Carbon Corporation's (NYSE: CCC) wholly owned subsidiary, Hyde Marine, Inc.®, announced today that its Hyde GUARDIAN® Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) HG600 unit will be installed on the largest icebreaker in the FSUE "Rosmorport" fleet – the 22600 project, a 25 mWt-power diesel vessel.

The contract is the first awarded to Hyde Marine in Russia for new vessel construction. The 22600 project will be delivered in 2015 and installed at Baltic Shipyard, one of the leading enterprises in the Russian shipbuilding industry. The installation will enable "Rosmorport" to meet ballast water treatment regulations associated with the Ballast Water Convention, which was introduced by the International Maritime Organization in 2004 to address the control and spread of invasive aquatic species via ships' ballast water and sediments.

The contract announcement follows the successful retrofit installation in 2011 of a Hyde GUARDIAN unit on the Russian arctic container vessel, MS Norilskiy Nickel. Additionally, Hyde Marine was awarded a contract in 2012 to install the Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS on two LPG tankers currently in construction at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. for Russian owner Novoship (part of the Sovcomflot group). Installation is expected on the LPG vessels in 2013.

The chemical-free Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS is comprised of automatic backwashing depth filtration and powerful UV disinfection.  The filter and UV are used during ballasting, and the water receives a second dose of UV prior to discharge. The Hyde GUARDIAN system offers a compact, modular design with low power consumption, low-pressure drop, and simple, fully automatic operation, making it a technically attractive solution for any type and size of vessel.

FSUE "Rosmorport" operates the largest icebreaker fleet in the world. The fleet is used for assisting vessels in winter navigation in most Russian seaports and will be used to assist vessels in ice conditions as an auxiliary icebreaker among complex caravans on the Northern Sea Route.

In 2011, the Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS became the first to gain Type Approval from the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS). The RS Type Approval allows Hyde GUARDIAN units to be installed on any Russian-flagged vessel and was granted for the entire range of treatment capacities offered by the Hyde GUARDIAN system, from 60 m3/hr. to 6000 m3/hr.
