The technology group Wärtsilä has announced the appointment of former DNV GL executive Torsten Buessow as director of Wärtsilä's Transas business unit. He replaces outgoing leader Frank Coles, who departed Wärtsilä in October to take on the role of CEO at Wallem Group.

Torsten joins Wärtsilä from DNV GL, where he worked for more than a decade, first as a VP of the company’s maritime software business unit and then as a VP of Fleet Performance Management, its maritime digital business unit. Before joining DNV GL, Torsten spent almost 10 years at Capgemini, a global management and IT consulting company.

Wärtsilä says that Torsten's expertise in maritime software, fleet operations, and post-merger integrations will be valuable in delivering on the company's "Smart Marine" vision, and creating a truly modern, connected ecosystem for the future of maritime operations.

“I am looking forward to leading the professional and experienced Transas team," Torsten said in a statement. "We will continue focusing on creating solutions to improve ship and port operations, and maritime academies by leveraging the latest technologies, including machine learning, Big Data analytics, and other innovations.”

Transas joined the family of Wärtsilä companies in May 2018. It is a leading provider of advanced technological solutions for the maritime industry, including fleet operations solutions, digital data and charts. The company is also a leader in simulation & training ship traffic control solutions.
