Maritime Transportation Scholarship Opportunity

Description:



Texas Southern University has partnered with the Port of Houston Authority to develop an academic program in Maritime Transportation Management and Security. The Bachelor of Science degree in Maritime Transportation Management and Security began in Fall 2010 and addresses three nationally recognized priorities: logistics/freight, security, and environment – in a single curriculum.



Scholarships up to $8,000 for academic year 2011-2012 are available to students who meet the criteria and who are admitted to the program. The program is supported with funds from TSU and the Port of Houston Authority.



Scholarship awards may include payment for tuition, fees, and/or books from $1,000 up to $4,000 per semester. Up to 24 scholarships per semester will be awarded.



Duration:



Fall 2011 – Spring 2012 (Renewal of academic scholarship is contingent upon full-time enrollment at TSU with 3.0 cumulative GPA or better)



Selection Process:



· Application Deadline: April 1, 2011



· Review of Scholarship Applications: April 4 – 15, 2011



· Interviews Conducted (if needed): April 18-22, 2011



· Award Notifications Sent to Students: April 25 – 28, 2011



· Students Confirm Acceptance of Scholarship: May 6, 2011 (or before)







Criteria:



· Must have a 3.0 on 4.0 GPA scale



· Must apply for admission and be admitted to TSU before awarded scholarship



· Must select Maritime Transportation Management and Security as major



· Maintain not less than 3.0 cumulative GPA each semester during the duration of the scholarship



· Must submit completed application form to the Department of Transportation Studies



· Must submit two typed (2) letters of recommendation (one must be from teacher/professor, counselor or principal on school letterhead)



· Must submit a one (1) page typed essay addressing the following:



“How Will the Maritime Transportation Scholarship Impact Your Education and Prepare You for a Career in the Maritime Industry?”
