Big Lift for Aasta Hansteen Platform

Construction of the platform for Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen field development is underway in South Korea, and on November 19 the first of four mega modules, weighing 2,200 tons and measuring 50x20x25 meters, was lifted into place at Hyundai Heavy Industries using the yard’s new crane barge with a capacity of 10,000 tons.

The Aasta Hansteen field development includes a SPAR platform, which will be the first such installation on the Norwegian continental shelf, the largest one in the world and the first to include condensate storage. A SPAR platform is a floating installation consisting of a vertical column moored to the seabed.

The Aasta Hansteen discovery was made in 1997. Together with Haklang and Snefrid Sør, the recoverable resources are estimated at 47 billion standard cubic meters of gas.

The field installation will feature conventional topsides with processing facilities. The risers transporting the gas from the seabed to the platform and further to the 480-kilometer Polarled pipeline will be pure steel which will be first of its kind on the Norwegian continental shelf.
