The 2013 Plimsoll Award was finally presented to Captain Richard Beadon on August 7th at a dinner of family, friends and associates at MITAGS in Linthicum Heights, MD. Beadon was supposed to receive the Plimsoll Award issued by Professional Mariner at a special presentation at the 2013 Connecticut Maritime Association Shipping Conference (CMA) in Stamford, CT on March 18th- 20th.

Beadon won the Plimsoll Award for his nearly 50 years of outstanding individual services for teaching safer navigation and simulation training. In fact, Captain Beadon is considered by many to be a ‘founding father’ of bridge resource management (BRM) by deck officers on ships plying global waters, and his drawings and teachings have been used in a number of books on the subject.

One of the people who nominated Beadon for the award had this to say about him: “Richard is in many ways, a founding father of BRM. While working at Warsash, England, he introduced this subject to a generation of U.K. mariners. If you look at the book by Robert Meurn, Watchstanding Guide for the Merchant Officer, many of the figures and attachments are credited to Richard…. Seeing Richard teach … was a real eye opener. The whole concept of voyage or passage planning was taken to a different level. I firmly believe that this has increased the safety of U.S. mariners in a way that is profound... His concern for the mariner and his safety is tangible and constant.”

Accepting the award on his behalf at CMA this year was Capt. Bob Becker, Director of Business Development at MITAGS. He also presented Capt. Beadon with the award at the dinner.
