EMMA MAERSK to set New Standards for Size and Deadweight Tons
AP Moller-Maersk is set to introduce the largest container ship ever to the shipping world. The first of its new “E” class container ships, the EMMA MAERSK, was named at the Odense Steel Shipyard on Saturday. Named for Maersk McKinney Moller’s late wife, the mega-vessel will be able to stow a record 22 boxes across with a declared TEU capacity of 11,000 TEU’s. The first ever ultra large container carrier will have a deadweight capacity of about 157,000 tons.
The new vessel is expected to ply the Europe to Asia routes, beginning in mid-September. Maersk expects to achieve superior economies of scale from the new vessel, both through increased carrying capacity and through other features such as its environmentally friendly silicone paint which could save the operators 1,200 tonnes of fuel in a given year.
