On 31 July 2015, WE Tech Solutions Oy received an order for the delivery of two Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator solutions to a series of 9400 dwt asphalt/bitumen tankers, including efficient DC-link power distribution. WE Tech is a leading energy efficiency solution provider for the shipping industry.

Based in Vaasa, Finland, WE Tech is to deliver its Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator solution to a series of two 9400 dwt asphalt/bitumen tankers owned by the Swedish shipping company Tarbit Shipping AB. The solution also includes efficient DC-link power distribution. The tankers are built by Turkey’s RMK Marine. Equipment delivery from WE Tech will commence in June, 2016.

With the WE DriveTM and the Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator technology from WE Tech, the energy efficiency of the machinery reaches unprecedented levels in the marine industry. With its active front-end low harmonic drive technology the WE DriveTM allows the shaft generator to operate over the full main engine speed range, while generating electricity for the vessel’s electrical network with high efficiency over the entire range. This feature is particularly prominent in electrical part loads – the normal electrical load condition in any ship.

WE Tech is also to deliver its efficient power distribution solution with a WE DriveTM and a Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator that can provide the vessel’s electrical network with up to 1000 kW electrical power in Power Take Out (PTO) mode. The WE DriveTM offers two Power Take In (PTI) modes: the first PTI mode can provide 820 kW auxiliary power to boost the Main Engine in demanding situations. The second PTI mode is for Take-Me-Home: the WE DriveTM is used as an auxiliary propulsion drive when the Main Engine is out of operation. Furthermore the solution utilizes the common DC-link of the WE DriveTM technology to enable energy efficient DC power distribution for larger electrical consumers such as the bow thruster and cargo pumps.

In 2014 and 2015, WE Tech received several orders of Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator solutions. These solutions will be delivered to China’s Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. for a series of 4 new building vessels owned by Wallenius Shipping of Sweden, to AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding, Co., Ltd. for a series of 4 new building vessels owned by Terntank Rederi A/S of Denmark, to Turkey’s Besiktas Shipyard for a series of 2 new building vessels owned by Transport Desgagnés of Canada, and to China’s Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry, Co., Ltd.  for a series of 2 new building vessels owned by Vulica Shipping of the US.
