Tundra MDS Have Been Awarded Full ISO 28007 Certification
Tundra Maritime Defense Services (MDS), the maritime division of Tundra Group, are delighted to announce that they have now been awarded full certification & accreditation for the recently issued ISO 28007-1:2015 (Guidelines for Private Maritime Security Companies), following a successful audit conducted by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA). This new accreditation ensures that Tundra MDS maintains the highest possible level of ISO 28007 certification, a level that is shared by just a handful of PMSC’s.
ISO 28007-1:2015 gives established guidelines to private maritime security companies (PMSC) that supply privately contracted armed security personnel (PCASP) on board ships and the compliance requirements are much more stringent than those required by the ‘old’ ISO/PAS 28007. Certification to the new 28007-1:2015 Standard demonstrates to the international community that Tundra MDS can legally, safely and effectively guard seafarers, their vessels and cargo.
The importance of PMSC’s possessing the new ISO 28007-1:2015 Standard was highlighted very recently, when the Marshall Islands (MI) Maritime Administrator issued an update to their circular regarding the Use of Armed Security on MI-Flagged vessels. Within the revision they state:
“Effective 01 January 2016, Companies shall engage only those PMSCs that are certified to at least the ISO PAS 28007:2012 standard by a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) authorized certification body. Those PMSCs becoming certified after 1 January 2016 and those renewing certification must comply with the ISO 28007-1:2015 standard.”
Lee Rimmer, Tundra MDS’s Managing Director, comments: “Our certification to the more-stringent 28007-1:2015 Standard demonstrates to the industry that we are able to continue to deliver the highest quality of service, to exacting standards, whilst using the management functions of the International Standard to increase performance, reduce our clients’ risk and make savings that we can pass onto our customers. The Marshall Islands quite clearly recognise the importance of this new Standard and it is entirely likely that other Flag States will follow suit, requiring ship owners to deal with just a handful of PMSC’s. This can only serve to maintain the highest standards within our industry, something that Tundra MDS have been championing for some years now”.
