Jurong Port in Recycling First

Jurong

Singapore’s Jurong Port is planning to extend two berths using construction materials made from concrete recycled from existing berths and yards. The port claims this is a world recycling first.

As well as using recycled, crushed concrete, the berths will feature solar panels on their substation roofs.

The berths will have approximately 30 percent more storage space and will be deepened so that they can service larger vessels.

The renovations are expected to be completed by 2016, and the project has been given the Green Mark (Gold) Award for environmentally sustainable construction methods by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority.

Jurong Port is also set to become home to the largest port-based solar system in the world with the installation of solar panels on over 95,000 square meters of warehouse roof space.

The area equates to about 13 football fields, and the system is expected to generate 10 megawatts of electricity at peak capacity.

The $22.5m development, a partnership with Sunseap and SolarPV Exchange, will provide power to the port with excess being fed back to the grid.

“This project is testimony to our ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability,” said Jurong Port CEO Ooi Boon Hoe. “The project will help promote Singapore as a hub for green energy generation.”
