Insurance Expert Discusses Pollution Coverage

MSC Flaminia

Published Oct 9, 2016 5:01 PM by The Maritime Executive

Christopher Alviggi, Vice President of the Marine & Energy Group at Alliant Insurance Services, based in New York, will be discussing waterborne pollution events and insurance coverage available at two upcoming conferences.

Alviggi will discuss the obligations of shipping, logistics and port operators, highlighting potential gaps and limitations of coverage the industry should consider.

He will discuss case studies including the MSC Flaminia, July 14, 2012, incident where three tank containers of di-vinylbenzene underwent rapid polymerization as a result of heat exposure which resulted in explosion/fire. The allegation made was that the cargo was mis-classified and improperly stowed. The Carriage of Goods by Sea Act “COGSA” requires full disclosure of cargo risks and potential recoveries may be limited under other maritime doctrines.

Highlighting potential gaps in insurance cover, Alviggi says insurance recovery may be complicated by jurisdictional complexities and geographical restrictions are imposed in insurance contracts.

He will be speaking at the World Congress of Ocean conference and the Charles Taylor Signal Maritime Conference, Cleveland Ohio, on May 23, 2017.
