ChartCo, the voyage compliance experts, and Seaspan, the world leader in independent containership management and ownership, have collaborated to deliver a location-based system to assist vessels in complying with MARPOL regulations.

EnviroManager is available as part of ChartCo’s PassageManager suite of software or as a standalone application and Seaspan, is providing product development input and piloting the software on a number of its vessels.

Compliance with all annexes of MARPOL, national and local environmental regulations is complex for ships’ crews and the penalties for error can run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, so ChartCo have provided an easy-to-use visual system which removes the guesswork. Using a GPS feed and a regularly updated geographic database, including all agreed national and international baselines, EnviroManager provides a simple color coded system to advise the crew what discharges are and are not permitted at any position worldwide including bilge water, sewage, air emissions, garbage, food waste and ballast.

Commenting on the development Martin Taylor, Managing Director of ChartCo, explained:

“ChartCo’s mission is to assist our customers to sail safely, efficiently and in compliance with all maritime legislation. Our customer base explained the problems that they were having with adhering to the environmental guidelines and we were pleased to work with Seaspan to develop a solution. EnviroManager is yet another example of ChartCo delivering a unique service for making voyage compliance simple.’

David Kramer, Director at Seaspan Ship Management in Vancouver added:

‘It is very important to Seaspan to be at the forefront of maritime compliance and we prioritize giving our crews the best tools and training available to achieve this. That is why we are partnering with ChartCo in delivering this innovative solution to the market. This will not only benefit Seaspan, but will help all vessels to avoid any negative impact on the global environment.’
