ARICE Project opens Ship-time Proposals to Industry

The Arctic ocean community is invited to seize the opportunity given by the ARICE consortium to access the Research icebreakers CCGS Amundsen, RV Sikuliaq and PRV Polarstern in the Arctic Ocean. This inter-disciplinary, cross-sectorial, international cooperation based on scientific excellence offers the opportunity of long-time cruise to facilitate high-quality exchange between the industry and the researchers and, as such, warmly welcomes industry on board. These high-quality funded cruises (seven working days on an up to 2 months long cruise) will gather different working groups embarked and maximize the operational days in the working areas.

Applications are welcome from international teams of researchers and industry partners from all career stages. Female applicants are highly encouraged to apply.

The EU-funded Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE) Project enables scientists to collect more data in the Arctic by: 1) Optimizing the use of existing polar research vessels through coordination, and 2) Working through the WOC to engage commercial vessels operating in the Arctic to collect oceanic and atmospheric data.

A first step is to assess the observations that are currently conducted on board vessels operating in the Arctic, including those observations obtained for navigational purposes. This is crucial to better understand the future needs on data collection in support of safe and responsible industry activities in the Arctic region.

The ARICE project will reduce risks to industry activities by expanding the scope and scale of Arctic ocean and atmosphere observations. It will contribute to understand, model, and predict the operating conditions.

The WOC efforts in the Arctic via ARICE are part of the global WOC ‘Smart Ocean-Smart Industries’ program which works to engage ocean companies to host or deploy instruments on vessels and platforms, or share data from previous studies.

The WOC CEO will be presenting information on these efforts at the upcoming Arctic Observing Summit (Davos, 24-26 June, 2018).

The annual WOC Sustainable Ocean Summit (SOS), Hong Kong, 14-16 November 2018, will again include a ‘Smart Ocean-Smart Industries’ session, which this year will focus on data collection in the Arctic and the ARICE project. A separate session will concentrate on safe and sustainable development of maritime activities in the Northern Sea Route connecting Asia and Europe.
