Stadt Electric Propulsion to 8 Offshore Vessels
The Norwegian company STADT has secured a major order for diesel-electric propulsion for the seismic support vessels that will be used by PGS – Petroleum Geological Services in Oslo. The ships will be owned and operated by Thor Offshore, and long-time chartered to PGS . Designers for the ships are Skipsteknisk in Aalesund, and the ships are to be built by Besiktas shipyard in Turkey.
FOR EXTREME CONDITIONS
These ships are designed for operation in the most severe conditions, including in ice. They will have DNV ice class 1A , one of the highest available for ships, and redundant diesel-electric propulsion system. The ship owners and designers have put reliable an efficient operation in focus for these ships , with the aim to secure their safe operation in the most remote places of the earth – in their search for oil. And with this as an important criteria for their selection of electric propulsion, PGS and Thor concluded that the STADT STASCHO NO-LOSS AC DRIVES would be the best fit for the purpose. PGS has very good experiences from using the STADT technology also in other seismic vessels , and have seen that the noise-free technology suits their advanced seismic operations very well.
SUSTAINABLE PROPUSION TECHNOLOGY
The overall goal for the STADT technology is to provide highly efficient and reliable solutions that can have a major positive environmental impacts, such as fuel savings, emission reductions . It also opens for high flexibility in fuel types that can be used onboard, such as HFO, MDO, MGO, LNG, as well as fuel cell and battery technologies , in different combinations . System upgrading will be rather easy as new energy sources develops trough the years.
The STADT No-LOSS AC drive solution is most likely the most efficient propulsion system on the market today, and is now installed or ordered for a total of 15 ships in the world.
COMPLETE SYSTEM APPROACH
The No-Loss drive technology is a patented invention from STADT , who also design the fully integrated system solution for the new offshore vessels in Turkey. The scope includes everything from Main switchboards , to STADT STASCHO drives, propulsion motors, Power Management System etc. Big and bulky transformers are not necessary in the STADT solution, so here space , weight and power losses are at a very minimum. STADT`s Sine-wave technology also eliminates the need for harmonic filters and all other PWM-related problems onboard the ships.
OTHER PARTNERS INVOLVED
In this project STADT will cooperate with other international partners chosen by the ship owners. These are the Japanese diesel-generator maker Yanmar, as well as the Swedish propeller manufacturer Berg Propulsion. The STADT electric propulsion is closely integrated with the generators and propellers .
STADT TAKES A LEADING POSITION IN TURKISH MARKET
During the last 3 years, STADT has been established as a leading company for electric ship propulsion system within the Turkish shipbuilding market. “ Further growth in this market is expected” - says Managing Director Hallvard Slettevoll at STADT AS in Gjerdsvika.
