Former Canada Prime Minister at SOS 2013 Forum on Global Ocean Commission

The World Ocean Council’s SOS 2013 special plenary session for industry input to the Global Ocean Commission will now also include a third Commissioner: The Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, former Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Canada.

This ‘Global Ocean Commission - Ocean Industry Forum’ session at SOS 2013, to be held on 24 April, will provide a key opportunity for the ocean business community to provide industry input directly to three of the Global Ocean Commissioners.

Mr. Martin will join Commissioners José María Figueres, former Costa Rican President, and Trevor Manuel, South African Minister, who are chairing the SOS 2013 industry forum session.

This unique opportunity for the international ocean business community to engage the Global Ocean Commission provides yet another compelling reason for industry to gather at the SOS 2013 to tackle shared ocean sustainability issues and help set the agenda for ensuring continued ocean access by responsible industry operators.

Just before the SOS 2013 formally opens, ocean industry representatives will convene for the agenda-setting ‘Oceans 2050’ workshop on 22 April. This business dialogue will identify the drivers, trends, and scenarios affecting the future of ocean industries and determine critical pathways for success and sustainability. The ‘Oceans 2050’ workshop provides a key opportunity for industry to develop common ocean messages to convey to the Global Ocean Commissioners at the SOS 2013.

The Global Ocean Commission brings together international leaders in an independent body to analyze the main challenges and threats to the high seas, recommend solutions for addressing them, and, in 2014, provide recommendations to the U.N. and other institutions and processes that can implement change.

The Global Ocean Commission is co-chaired by former Costa Rican President José María Figueres, South African Cabinet minister Trevor Manuel, and former British Foreign Secretary David Miliband MP. They are joined by a panel of senior political, finance, and business figures from around the world. The Global Ocean Commission hopes to help galvanize the development and implementation of a cost-effective, economically beneficial and sustainable system for managing the high seas in the 21st Century.
