A Vietnamese cargo ship has collided with an Indonesian sailboat off Indonesia's East Java province leaving three dead and 12 missing.

The cargo ship MV Thaison 4 and the KM Mulya Sejati, which was carrying 27 people, mostly Indonesian fishermen, collided before dawn on Saturday.

Media reports cite witnesses saying the sailboat capsized after being hit in the stern.

All 22 Vietnamese crew members on the Thaison 4 are safe, and 12 people from the sailboat have been rescued.

The cargo ship was loaded with tapioca flour and en route to Tanjung Perak port in Surabaya.

Search efforts continue with two naval vessels and a helicopter deployed.

Earlier this month, over 50 died after an overcrowded speedboat carrying Indonesian migrant workers sunk en route from Malaysia to Batam, Indonesia.
