Barbara and John Davey were onboard Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas in December when the ship encountered violent weather in the Mediterranean sea.
Just three days after being tossed about her cabin, Barbara Davey fell into a coma. When the ship reached Malta Barbara was taken to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to Britain where she died on January 7.
In a statement released following the violent weather, Royal Caribbean said that more than 100 passengers had been injured, most of them minor injuries with only the most serious reported as fractures.
The ship sustained damages to several public areas and a loss of electricity to some staterooms and public venues. The inclement weather forced the ship to skip the port of call in Alexandria and proceed ahead to the next port of call is Valetta, Malta.
Barbara’s husband John Davey, a taxi driver from Scotland claims the violent weather that tossed his wife about the cabin caused her death. Davey is suing Royal Caribbean for leaving port despite reports of stormy weather. He says the ship should have never been allowed to sail though the storm. Royal Caribbean called the weather “unexpected” and disputes the notion that the stormy weather contributed to Barbara’s death. The cruise line claims that Barbara Davey suffered from a pre-existing medical condition.
