Ferry Capsizes in Northeast India, 35 Dead
Police reports state that an overcrowded ferry has capsized in a remote section of northeast India, most likely due to heavy winds and torrential rain. At least 35 passengers have already been reported dead, and 75 others remain missing. About 50 people made it to safety thus far.
The Assam state police chief released a statement claiming that the ferry had about 200 total passengers onboard, but specific details could not be confirmed.
According to local news reports, the accident occurred late Monday – in local Indian time – on the Brahmaputra River, near Fakiragram in west Dhubri district.
