Bulk Carrier Runs Aground in Hillsborough Bay

Coast Guard sector St. Petersburg, responded to the grounding of a 575-foot bulk carrier at 11:15 p.m. Sunday, January 2. The German owned POLLUX ran aground two miles east of Gadsden point, located at the furthest southeast tip of MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL.



The Malta flagged ship came from Galveston, Texas and was delivering fertilizer to the port of Tampa.



Vessel traffic in the area has not been affected.



The Coast Guard reports no injuries or pollution from the incident and continues to work with the ships captain to free the vessel.
