"In a way, this painting is a companion piece to the 'Svitzer Meringa' painting I posted on September 5th. Both of these tugboats were on the same job when I took these reference photos, so I decided to create both paintings the same size. I absolutely love the character of this tugboat; she's beautiful, but in a rough 'n tough kind of way. She's not new, she's not the prettiest tug in the fleet, but to me, there's definitely something special about her. One of the most detailed, realistic paintings I've ever created."

"Sailing into the morning light on her way to meet an incoming ship. The 'Meringa' is one of the Svitzer fleet of tugboats which operate in the harbours around the Australian coastline. I snapped the reference photo for this painting from the deck of the Svitzer 'Carrington' as the two tugboats headed out on an early morning job. The most enjoyable part of the painting process for this piece was rendering the water in the foreground."

"The very best aspect of my work is the occasional opportunity to get away from my studio and head out into the harbour aboard a tugboat. Taking photographs of these beautiful boats from the harbour foreshore is one thing... but the perspective is completely different when you're out on the harbour alongside these tugs. The reference photo for this painting was taken aboard a sister tug as the pair of boats headed out to the entrance of the harbour to meet with an arriving ship."

"Light is everything when creating paintings that evoke an atmosphere. The photo for this painting was taken when the afternoon light was beginning to fade, and the sunset began to melt into dusk. The ship made a slow departure through the harbour; so slow I worried about the light fading too quickly for the photo to become a painting. Luckily the dusk light kept its colours long enough for the ship and her escorting tugs to cross my camera."

"There are some amazing moments that cannot be captured if you are standing on the shore! This was one of those moments. I was lucky enough to be aboard a tugboat that was part of a team escorting this monster ship back towards her home port. After clearing the harbour, the tug I was aboard swung astern, leaving the big ship and her last remaining tugboat escort side-by side with only the vastness of the ocean before them. Soon after the last tugboat turned back for harbour and the moment was gone. One of my favourite paintings."
