Two Corpus Christi firefighters suffered injuries while battling a cargo ship blaze sparked by welding.

Both men reportedly inhaled hot gas. One firefighter was treated and released following the fire on Tuesday afternoon aboard the MV Antonio Monrovia at the Port of Corpus Christi, Texas. The other injured firefighter was still improving on Wednesday at a San Antonio hospital and should be released in a couple of days.

Repair workers in the ship’s hold were welding when some wood being used to support the cargo went up in flames. The fire was extinguished in about an hour.

The ship was transporting wind turbine parts.
