Norovirus Strikes Down 200 on Dawn Princess

About 200 people have been confined to their cabins this weekend after suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea during a cruise around New Zealand.

The Dawn Princess has around 1,500 passengers on board, and those with norovirus have not been able to come ashore as the vessel continued its journey around the country’s south island.

More people are getting sick, but local media reports that health authorities say the rate of spread is now declining.

Carnival Australia corporate communications manager David Jones told local media that a stringent sanitation regime has been implemented on board. Railings, door handles and lift buttons are being disinfected and self-service food areas had been closed and passengers isolated.

The ship is on the 10th day of a 13-day trip and left New Zealand for Australia on Monday.
