The US Naval Criminal Investigative Service has named truck driver Jeffrey Tyrone Savage as the gunman who shot Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo at Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia on Monday.

Savage, 35, entered the base using a Transportation Worker Identification card. He encountered security forces on the vessel and a struggle occurred. However, according to reports, he managed to disarm a petty officer on duty and use the gun to kill Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo, 24, as he blocked Savage from shooting the female petty officer. Savage was then killed during a gun battle with security forces.

Navy investigators have not found any connection between Savage and the ship or anyone on it. Savage has previously been convicted of manslaughter and on possession of cocaine.
