Transas Equips Gas Tanker owned by UNICOM With Navigational Equipment
Transas is proud to have equipped the gas tanker ‘SKF Tobolsk’ built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyards for UNICOM (Cyprus), the subsidiary of Russian shipowner Sovkomflot.
The ship was named after the Russian town Tobolsk, now one of the centres of the country’s oil industry. The gas tanker of 26 400 tons displacement has 35 000 m³ tonnage and is intended for marine transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and ammonia. Gas is liquefied for ease of transportation and storage. LNG is best known for its use in the production of ecological automotive fuel. A full shipload on ‘SKF Tobolsk’ equates to enough LNG to refuel 400 000 automobiles.
Transas equipped the gas tanker with a set of navigational equipment, including 2 ECDIS systems with ‘track-control’ functionality designed to keep ships moving along the planned route) and the informational display Navi-Conning, which represents information about the ship’s equipment on one display.
The combination of ECDIS and Navi-Conning comprises the highly effective Transas Integrated Navigation System, which allows the watch officer to estimate the navigational situation on the fly and to make the right decision in the shortest possible time. This ultimately results in a noticeable increase in marine security. ECDIS functions (such as strict passage planning with climate condition integration and the usage of ‘track-control functionality) allow the shipowner to reduce the operating costs and to cut the passage time. Thus the efficiency of marine transportation is increased.
With the launch of gas tanker ‘SKF Tobolsk’, Sovkomflot enters a new market in Russia ??" the field of marine transportation of energy carriers.
This project marks the continued co-operation between Transas and Hyundai Heavy Industries HHI) shipyards. Transas has supplied a wide range of marine equipment for gas tankers ‘Tomsk’ and ‘Camberly’ and for 5 ice-tankers: ‘Pavel Chernysh’, ‘Captain Kostichev’, ‘Viktor Titov’, ‘Yury Senkevich’ and ‘Viktor Konetsky’, built by HHI for Sovkomflot.
