The oil spill occurred when a German-registered container ship, "MSC Ilona," collided with the Panamanian-registered "Hyundai Advance" near the mouth of the Pearl River.
Chinese authorities said that the "Hyundai Advance" tried to escape the scene, but was traced.
The hull of the "MSC Ilona" was punctured causing its oil to spill. It is estimated that 138,000 gallons have already spilled into the China Sea, 15 miles from the mouth of the Pearl River. The white sea dolphin, one of the most endangered marine species in the world, lives in the Pearl River estuary.
