Staten Island Ferry Accident Lawsuits - $2.3 Billion
The ferry ?Andrew J. Barberi? slammed into a pier on October 15, 2003, near St. George Terminal, killing 11 people and injuring 71 others. The City is now facing $3.2 billion in lawsuits, but is trying to limit its liability to $14.4 million.
The City has already paid $5.96 million to repair the Barberi and another $1.5 million to fix the damaged pier.
The City expects to spend approximately $23 million more in the next two years to implement safety measures on boats and on repair costs related to the disaster.
The NYC Department of Transportation is expected to spend $15 million to overhaul ferry operations based on recommendations by the Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS).
GMATS, which is being paid $1.4 million as a consultant, is also being paid $1 million to train ferry crew members.
