18 Dead & 18 Missing In Sunken Ship Off Indonesias Borneo

An overcrowded vessel off the coast of Indonesia’s island of Borneo, has sunk in strong winds, leaving 18 individuals dead and 18 still missing. 

Hariyono, a Port Official for Pulau Laut island, reported that a passenger ship sank on Monday the 6th, an hour after departure from port, en route to Geronggang, another port on Borneo.  According to Hariyono, the vessel was carrying 4 crew members and 101 passengers. 

There is currently a search being conducted for the 18 missing passengers, as well as an investigation of the cause of the sinking. 

Indonesia is an archipelago containing over 17,000 islands.  With that brings ships as a main source of transportation in Indonesia, unfortunately overcrowding and poor safety standards result in many fatal accidents in the area.
