A.P. Moller continues to build its portfolio of port related investments (Portek Malta)

A.P. Moller Capital, the investment management arm of the A.P. Moller Group, is continuing to build its portfolio of port and logistics investments. In its latest move, the investment manager, which has approximately $2 billion in assets under management, announced it has agreed to acquire Singapore-based Portek International from Mitsui & Co.

Portek is a cargo port terminal operator and engineering business with interests in seven port terminals across Africa, Asia and Europe. Founded in 1988, Portek operates a geographically diversified portfolio of multipurpose terminals serving local and international trade flows. Its terminal interests span Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta and Vietnam.

Portek also provides port engineering and operations and maintenance services, principally from Singapore and Indonesia. Its terminals handle around seven million tonnes of bulk cargo, 700,000 containers, and around 90,000 vehicles each year.

Portek is a strong fit with our investment strategy and active owner philosophy,” said Semih Gökmen, Partner at A.P. Moller Capital. “It is an established business with a diversified portfolio of port operations serving important trade flows across three continents, supported by experienced local operating teams.”

The investment gives A.P. Moller exposure to some of the fastest-growing cargo markets such as Vietnam, where Portek is an indirect shareholder in the owner/operator of the Vietnam International Container Terminal (VICT), the premier container port project in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It also manages a terminal in Latvia, Indonesia, and Malta, as well as locations in Algeria and two terminals in Gabon.

Following completion of the acquisition, A.P. Moller Capital reports that it intends to work closely with Portek’s local operating teams to build on the company’s existing capabilities and support its next phase of development. It said there will be a focus on operational performance, governance, safety, capital discipline and environmental performance, including emissions-reduction planning.

This acquisition comes just weeks after A.P. Moller Capital said it has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Euroports Group, which operates more than 50 deep-sea and inland port terminals across 10 European countries and China.

The investment company also recently won regulatory approval for a deal announced in February 2025 to acquire a 51 percent stake in port operator BERGÉ. A.P. Moller Capital said that through the partnership it aims to support the growth and development of BERGÉ to become the leading multipurpose port infrastructure company in Iberia and Latin America.

Driven by the growth in global trade and shipping, ports have become a hot investment. In addition to the shipping lines that are working to secure the trade routes, investors have been attracted to investment in the sector due to strong growth profiles.
