MITAGS-PMI STCW Revalidation & Refresher Course Now Available

The revalidation / refresher training listed below must be taken every 5 years.  Note that several of the 1-day seminars (MED-DOT, HAZMAT, radar) can be scheduled “on demand” in the evenings or weekends. Please check with Admissions. The PSC refresher is under development and expected to be on the schedule by July. 

The following is a list of the most common ones:

Drug and Alcohol Testing (1-Day, Med-DOT-DA):

Every 5 years, for mariner(s) designated, by the SMS, to gather specimens after a reportable marine accident.

Hazardous Materials (1-day):

Every 3 years, for officers and ratings responsible for cargo handling on ships carrying dangerous and hazardous substances in solid, bulk, or package form. (Note: Some companies offer this training onboard.)

Radar Renewal  (ROR-1): 

Must renew within 5 years of the radar course certificate.  License is invalid if radar endorsement has expired.

Basic Training Revalidation (2-Day BT-Rev): 

For all mariners (licensed and unlicensed) with STCW endorsements / credentials.  Certificate must be dated within five years of STCW credentials renewal.  Must also have 1 year of sea time in the last 5 years.

Advanced Fire Fighting Revalidation (2-Day, FF-ADV-Rev): 

For deck and engine officers with STCW credentials.  Every five years of STCW credential renewal.  Must also have 1 year of sea time in the last 5 years.

STCW Upgrade Requirements

STCW also requires mandatory training and assessment for the following credentials. They include:

• Officer in charge of a navigation watch (OICNW)

• Officer in charge of an engineering watch (OICEW)

• Chief Mate / Master

• First / Chief Engineer

Note:  If you Do NOT have 1 year of sea time in the last 5 years…

…then you must take Basic Training Refresher (3 days, BT-REF), the 2-day AFF-Rev, plus a Personal Survival Craft Refresher (Under development.  Expected to be on the MITAGS schedule by the beginning of the third quarter.)
